NORTHERN IRELAND TRACK and FIELD RANKINGS
The recording of Annual rankings of track and field performances by Northern Ireland athletes was somewhat haphazard during the formative years of the sport although somewhat fortuitously for those interested in the history of the sport the coverage accorded to athletics at all levels by local and national press was far in excess of the somewhat cursory approach today.
My tentative steps into the black arts of statistics began through the encouragement and inspiration of Maeve Kyle through the then Northern Ireland Womens AAA's in the early 1970's. This was quickly followed by making contact with the late Peter Pozzoli who was obsessed with Irish Women's athletics and thus started what has been 43 years of recording Annual rankngs lists for Northern Ireland female athletes.
In the 70's and 80' Brian Rowan (he of BBC broadcasting fame) produced Senior mens lists and in the mid 1980's fellow teacher and steeplechase star Alan Keys collaborated with me in the production of the first comprehensive male'female listings.
Over the years the production of lists has gone from quarto sheets produced on a school gestetnes through professionally printed booklets complete with photographs and back to A4 hand produced documents. Sadly in my view the impact of the internet has brough the hard copy to an end and indeed local male lists no longer appear.
Depite the fact that Power of Ten has made the production of local lists, in the eyes of some, unnecessary I feel there is still a need. Firstly in recent years I have made a point of including athletes from Donegal, Monaghan and Cavan to reflect the now almost total colaboration between Athletics NI and the Ulster Council and these are not acknowledged by Po10 and secondly I have found that Po10 does not necessarily pick up on all performances. This is not to say that the lists porduced here are infallible but hopefully between us we cover pretty near everything.
